I would have to say my music influences would
be Jimi Hendrix, Van Halen and Stevie Ray Vaughn. I have been
playing Guitar for about 21 years now. A good portion of it has been by
ear and not by the "laws" of theory. Now, I don't mean
"laws" as in too strict, but almost a defined set of rules in which
you have to go by. Sure I understand a little on how to read music, but
it never got that in depth. I prefer to play by creative instinct rather
than rules. However, I have nothing against music theory. I learn
a little now and then and how it relates to the way I learned how to play.
Since I am not playing in a professional manner so to speak, it really makes
no difference now does it? I record in my studio either by myself or
with other friends and musicians who happen to stop by for a bit. Mainly
for fun, but who knows. I listen to a variety of music from many genres
and consider music an art form or another language in some cases. Also,
since people perceive music in their own way, anything is possible.
Theory, or not, the gears of creativity must spin in order for the art to be
forged. Instruction, while helpful, can sometimes be restraining.
No matter how it's made, it will eventually reach an ear, or maybe a few, for
individual interpretation. How you perceive it, is entirely up to you.
Other
instruments I have learned to some extent are the drums, which I have done for
about the same length of time, but primarily focusing on the guitar.
Keyboards where thrown in there to some degree and when I stir it all up in
the studio, well sometimes it gets interesting.
